Ronaldo & Manu

While it seemed impossible that the winger Cristiano Ronaldo could top his 2006/07 antics, he did just that the following season. Ronaldo played a major part! scoring 42 goals! As the Reds saw off the challenge of Chelsea to notch the Double. Strengthened by the summer signings of Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Anderson and Nani, United recovered from a slow start to the season to being on top off the table for the majority of the campaign. Despite a late charge from Chelsea, a final-day victory at Wigan which Ryan Giggs secured a winner which secured a 17th league title for United. Ten days later, in Moscow, the Reds and Blues fought it out for silverware again. Ronaldo's opener was cancelled out by Frank Lampard and, after 120 long hard minutes, the match went to penalties. Ronaldo's miss gave John Terry the chance to take the trophy, but the Chelsea skipper slipped and smacked his effort against the post. Manu won the shoot out and won the champions league for the 3rd time

2000-2009

2000-2009 :
United started the new decade, century and millennium in strong fashion. They entered a brand new competition ''the FIFA Club World Championship in Brazil'' .The January trip to South America didn't result in any silverware but it gave the Reds relaxtion time in the hot sun. Freshened up by this trip, they raced ahead of their rivals in the title race when they returned to England. They achieved their sixth Premiership title early, in April, and still without a world class keep such as Peter Schmeichel which left Manchester United. Several goalkeepers including Mark Bosnich tried and failed to impress during the 1999/2000 season. So it wasn't surprising when World Cup and European Championship winner Fabien Barthez joined United in July 2000. The crazy but brilliant French goalkeeper helped United to win their third successive title in 2000/01. Liverpool had been the last team to do it, in 1982, 1983 and 1984, but this was under two managers : Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan. Sir Alex Ferguson had led them for all three of United's back-to-back titles, and was the first manager in English football to achieve the hat-trick of trophy's. Ferguson's biggest signing in 2002 summer was Rio Ferdinand, one of England's best performers at the World Cup Finals in Japan and Korea. The £30 million signing was key to Ferguson since they lost Jaap Stam. Ferdinand helped the Reds to gain their Premiership title in May 2003 but it ended badly for him because he failed a drug test and was banned for 8 months.Without Rio they lost the league to Aresnal but regained themselves by beatin Millwall 3-0 in the F.A cup.

Busby's First Success

Busby's first trophy as Manchester United manager was in 1948 which was the FA Cup which they took after securring a 4-2 win overBlackpool. In the game they were losing 2-1 but fought back and won. This was considered as one of the best cup finals ever played.

Formed

The club was formed as Newton Heath (L & Y.R.) F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. After nearing bankuptcy in 1902, the club was taken over by J.H. Davies who changed its name to Manchester United. United appointed Sir Matt Busby as manager after the Second World War, and his then-unheard-of policy of producing most of the players through the club's youth team brought great success, with the club winning the Football League in 1956 and 1957. This success was stopped by the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which eight of the club's players died. It was thought that the club might never play again, but once Busby had recovered from his injuries he built another great team which went on to win the football league in 1965 and 1967, and became the first English winners of the European Cup in 1968. This was a great success in English Football.
